Houghton Blind Society

I thought you might be interested to know that our Young Leaders group have raised a fantastic total of £628.48. for Houghton Blind Society.

We are awaiting dates for the Celebration Event, which is expected take place at the Exchange Buildings in Sunderland. I understand from EBC staff that our learners have finished well ahead of other Schools in the competition.

Our Young Leaders are superb!

Christmas Decorations

Emma Pritchard, Lauryn Kerton, Jade Rogers and Alisha Hunter have all produced some high quality products under the excellent guidance of Miss Mullen who is one of our outstanding teachers of Technology.

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world. The aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men. HKSC is keen to support Movember and developed some interesting moustaces to supoprt awarness and raise funds. Here are some pictures with the Senior Leadership Team, staff and learners, sporting some creative facial furniture!

Working in Partnership with Springboard

Last week I visited some of our Year 10 learners who access high quality of provision at Springboard, which is based in Hetton. It was great to see how well learners had progressed and how much they enjoyed their learning.

Cadet Information Drop-in

Friday 11th November 2011

This was an event suggested and organised by some Learners who are in Cadets and wanted to help other Learners to understand what Cadets are about and what they do. As they were in uniform for Armistice Day it was an ideal opportunity to showcase thee work of the Cadets. The boys set themselves up in the school Library and brought in some kit for demonstration. It was very well attended and the boys were very busy throughout lunchtime. They spoke to Learners about how to join the Cadets and showed them the kit, also giving information about the meeting times and what happens every week. They were terrific ambassadors for Cadets and the other Learners really enjoyed it.

Seven Weeks In

It has been a very exciting and eventful half term. Instead of reading my views, here are some of our Year 7 learners who have given their views on their first half term at HKSC.

Houghton Kepier Sports College has been amazing so far a little confusing but nothing I can't handle, it's nearly been 7 weeks but doesn’t feel like it at all. It feels like I've been here years not weeks. The teachers here have all been so friendly they're always there to help and have little chin wags with. I know they're my teachers but they're also like my school friends and family. When I first came here I thought it would be the same as primary but surprisingly I enjoy so many more subjects such as art, R.E, PSHE even maths and English. Don’t get me wrong the corridors scare me sometimes everyone charges down like raging animals. Sometimes you feel like your getting carried to your lessons, but I don’t mind. You definitely get a good education here and if I keep my head down and work hard I can see myself getting A stars in year 11

It has been the best 7 weeks of my life. The teachers are amazing and so are the lessons. My best lesson is PSHEC because if you have any worries you can say them in that lesson. The canteen is also a nice place to be because it smells nice all the time; the staffs in there are all very kind. All the children in this school are warm and welcoming just like the wonderful teachers. Our head of year and our year manager as well as my coaching teacher are THE BEST. Hopefully the rest of the year is going to be like these 7 weeks.

My first week at Houghton Kepier Sports College was scary frightening because we were only starting. On my second week the lessons were good and fantastic because I enjoyed PSHCE and coaching. On the third week we had settled into Houghton Kepier Sports College. My lessons were fine on the fourth week I was enjoying being there. I had settled in really well. On the fifth week had made lots of new friends and I new my way around here. When I came in on the mornings I went in to the library because I can do my homework on a morning. I like horses a lot so if we do any posters I will put horses on it. On my sixth week my lessons are really great as well I love English and Maths and our new Principle has settled in as well. We have all worked hard up to now. I have enjoyed being at Houghton Kepier Sports College I feel happy because I have turned into a young adult being here is great fun and exiting.

The first week at Houghton Kepier was very nerve wrecking, I didn’t know where to go and what to do but my lessons were fun. One of my favourite lessons I science and another is PE. I started to do football after school and Badminton. It has changed my life of staying in the same class all the time we have to move to different lessons but it keeps me on my feet.

Houghton Kepier is a great educated school I think this school is well better than my primary school because of all the great things like school dinners, shorter lessons, the experiments and fun things. We do our subjects, I especially enjoy going for good work and earning gonks! My two favourite lessons are PE and Art. Its mostly because I am good at them. The things I don't enjoy are hard tests and boring lessons. But so far I think this school is great.

To start with I think the first weeks has been brilliant. The teachers are brilliant, the food is brilliant. The whole school is brilliant. The one good thing is that Teachers are very kind and respectful. They will help us whenever we break down and lessons are very fun understanding. Gonks and commendations are very helpful threw Kepier they make us work hard. While I have been hear I have learned that some of the children have been very responsible and grown-up. I think this school is great and I hope it stays that way!!

Year 9 Learners visit Nissan

Our Community Leaders of the Future

I would love to tell you about a fantastic group of learners in Year 9 that Miss Large has been working with over the past year. This group of 29 learners are currently involved in a project called Community Leaders of the Future for which they will receive an NVQ Level 1 Qualification in Enterprise skills.

They were selected to work alongside other Secondary Schools in the area and with local Businesses organisations on various enterprising events outside of school. These learners have always excelled in these tasks winning prizes every time and received excellent comments from the Business Leaders they have worked with.

So far they have raised £500 for their chosen charity The Houghton Blind Society. We have sold cakes and drinks during evening school performances, raffled Easter eggs, and had collections. We have just put money boxes into every staffroom and office in the school and we will be meeting as a group soon to come up with some different fundraising ideas for Christmas.

Our results just get better!

Due to re-marking of exam papers, 53% of our learners have now achieved 5A*-C including English and Maths. Well done to all our learners as we are very proud of every single one of you.

Learner's head off to Derwent Hill

Over forty Y8 learners and fifteen Y10 learners leave today for the Lake District to visit Derwent Hill. We wish them a fabulous time and hope that they enjoy all the outward bound activities.
